A magnesium blood test evaluates the amount of magnesium in blood and concludes the cause
of abnormal levels of magnesium, calcium, and/or potassium. The RBC test is also known as the
Magnesium Blood Test. Magnesium is a type of electrolyte which is a type of responsible
minerals for body functions through muscles, nerves, immune system, and heart. Minerals

When is the test required?
If the doctor suspects kidney related issues, pregnancy, diabetes or if other blood tests show
abnormal levels of other minerals, such as calcium, potassium, or phosphorus.
If a person is short of magnesium for a long period of time and the result is magnesium
deficiency, they may have:
- Weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Numbness or tingling
- Irregular heartbeat
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Confusion or slurred speech
- Seizures
High levels of magnesium are not frequent like low levels. Person with high magnesium may
suffer from:
- Muscle weakness
- Fatigue
- Nausea and vomiting
- Trouble breathing
- Cardiac arrest
Interpretation:
Normal results are-
- 1.8 to 2.6 mg/dL for adults
- 1.7 to 2.1 mg/dL for children
- 1.5 to 2.2 mg/dL for newborns
Low magnesium or Hypomagnesemia: Less than 1.7 mg/dL approx
High Magnesium or Hypermagnesemia: Above 2.2 mg/dL approx
What abnormal ranges indicate:
Increased levels of magnesium - It may be seen in
- Kidney disease
- End stage of renal disease
- Tissue trauma
- Hyperparathyroidism
- Prolonged use of aspirin
Low levels of magnesium can be an indication of diabetes
- Digestive problems
- Malnutrition
- Alcoholism
- Prolonged diarrhea
- Severe burns
A drop in magnesium levels during pregnancy can indicate preeclampsia.
