Syphilis Blood Tests

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection. It happens due to Treponema pallidum. A syphilis test is an important tool for diagnosing and treating this condition. It is used to detect the presence of the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. The test involves taking a sample of blood or other bodily fluid from the patient and testing it for the presence of antibodies specific to syphilis. If these antibodies are present, it indicates that the patient has been infected with syphilis and requires treatment.
The WHO Global HIV Progress Report shows that 7.1 million adults contracted syphilis in 2020. Syphilis screening can be done by taking a blood sample, a fluid sample from a wound, or a spinal fluid sample.

Tests :

  • Blood tests verify the presence of antibodies produced by the body to combat infection. The antibodies of the bacterium responsible for syphilis stay in the body for a longer period. This blood test determines the infection.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid. If it is suspected that the person has the complications of the syphilis nervous system, the doctor may suggest cerebrospinal fluid sample testing via lumbar puncture.
Purpose of the test:
  • Diagnostic testing is recommended if anyone has symptoms related syphilis. It causes a broad range of symptoms. Doctors may recommend screening for syphilis, even when the symptoms are not severe.
  • Screening for syphilis is testing for the infection in people who are asymptomatic.
  • Monitoring is one of the most important steps to conclude that the patient is responding to treatment.
